칵스 ~ grey

THE KOXX, “Grey”

Why is it “grey” instead of “gray”? Because the Queen’s English! Whatever. I can forgive them this transgression because their music is still awesome. “Grey” is quite different from the other tracks on their latest EP Red, and from a lot of their songs in general, but KOXX have been known to release a slow song every once in a while, and I guess this is that song.

I also love this song because the lyrics in the last verse (“The blossom nurtured by light is also withered by that unbearable light”) is strongly reminiscent of the lyrics in Life & Time’s “Flower,” which is one of my favorite Life & Time songs ever.

(grey)

(grey)

English:

There’s a path on a hill in the hazy mist

I can’t see anybody, it’s suffocating

The people in the dark city

all search for the same thing; I’m anxious

The times that seemed like they’d last forever

are scattering like a broken clock

It seemed like I could just grab on

to the illusions that slowly turned me into a fool

I’m here, locked up inside myself

The morning skips past

Don’t search for me; even if the sun rises,

I’m in a place where light doesn’t enter

(grey)

Butterflies get drunk off the scent in the city

With a sweet sound, bees throw their bodies around

All the kids in the spotlight

have no foresight and so they falter

The people in the dark city

all search for the same thing; I’m anxious

The blossom nurtured by light

is also withered by that unbearable light

I’m here, locked up inside myself

The morning skips past

Don’t search for me; even if the sun rises,

I’m in a place where light doesn’t enter

(grey)
