Wings of the ISANG, “Island”

As rich as Wings of the ISANG’s rock sound is, their lyrics are equally rich. Sometimes a seven minute song will only have a few lines, but those lines are seven minutes’ worth of poignancy. Their lyrics are like poetry, so trying to translate their lyrics is like trying to translate poetry – and have the end result still sound like poetry. I don’t always succeed, but I always try.

I’m especially motivated since Wings of the ISANG are such great guys! I got to meet them after a show a while back, and they were so nice (and nerdy!) and it was just a great experience. I wanted to buy their new album, Stream of Consciousness, which they subsequently signed, but they also threw in their previous albums for free. I’m finally getting around to translating those songs, like “Island” off their first EP.

English:

There’s a single, small island somewhere

It dreams as it rests in time

I wonder what it wanted to say

Its sullen smile doesn’t say anything

It follows after that departing time

That one lonely, forgotten island

Even the sound of the waves grows distant

and disappears from the painting of memory

Only the lonely island remains

in the space left by sad, quiet silence

Along with the fading starlight,

it disappears far, far into darkness

Only the lonely island remains

in the space left by sad, quiet silence

Along with the fading starlight,

it disappears far, far into darkness

It comes to be forgotten in a vain fantasy,

everything about that island

It is always in the same place, but

it’s a lonely island that nobody searches for
