Wetter, “The Other Way”

I’ve pretty much memorized every single song on their album Romance in a Weird World, and this is by far my favorite song. There’s this thing called 떼거리 (ddegori) in Korean, which casually translates as “groupthink,” and this song is an overt criticism of the groupthink that so strongly pervades Korean society. I think I’ve shared this anecdote before, but I used to have a coworker whose “favorite” drama/actor/singer/song was whatever was popular at the moment, constantly changing. This is not an isolated example – this is what Korea is. The same preferences, the same makeup, the same fashion, the same outrages, the same way of thinking. It’s impossible to explain the extent to which this sentiment has seeped into pop culture here; but live here for any extended period of time, and it’s inescapable. I would go on to criticize the irony of only listing famous male rockers at the end (seriously, can’t Sister Rosetta Tharpe get a freaking break?!) but if Americans hardly know any more rock music than that, it would be unfair to hold Koreans to a higher standard.

English:

I walk in the opposite direction and speak contrarily

I deliberately misconstrue things when talking

Those who live their lives “properly”

they see me as pathetic, you know

Those who live their lives “properly”

they see me as strange, you know

They walk the same streets

thinking about the same things

They want the same solutions

to their similar problems

They get drunk off the exact same happiness

They feel the exact same contentment

They get drunk off the exact same sadness

That’s how they go to their deaths

[They dance the exact same dance

to the exact same song in the exact same clothes]

[They go on living while feeling the

exact same happiness and exact same sadness]

[I’m living without

feeling anything or thinking anything]

[I hate the idea of living while feeling

the exact same happiness and exact same sadness]
