Guckkasten, “Frame”

Guckkasten’s popularity has been surging recently, thanks to lead singer Ha HyunWoo’s amazing performance on King of Masked Singers. Despite that, only their most popular singles have been translated into English. I wanted to change that – then immediately regretted my decision. Guckkasten’s lyrics are very poetic, so they’re A LOT to unpack. The words here are a fairly literal translation, but the line order is all over the place so I would say this is probably my least accurate translation ever. But maybe it gets the idea across?

English:

Even if I stare and stare,

I become as useless as

the growing number

of images of being trapped

that my open eyes concocted

It’s my misfortune that

my beauty is exiled

it grows older and older

and keeps moving further away

even as I keep approaching

What is left?

Even my small fantasies are gone

I abandoned so many

young, living soliloquies

Little by little, shake, shake,

shake me, break me

Little by little, move, move,

move me, bite me

Even though I search and search,

the clearer I can see

the things I’m trying to grab,

the more faintly

the mask-wearing answers shine

Even though I run and run,

I come back to the same place

There are so many stains

the wrinkles match the stereotype

the goddess of mercy [1] sees in me

What is left?

Even my small fantasies are gone

I abandoned so many

young, living soliloquies

Little by little, shake, shake,

shake me, break me

Little by little, move, move,

move me, bite me

[1] I’m pretty sure this is referring to Avalokiteśvara, the bodhisattva of compassion.
