Akdong Musician (AKMU), “Astroturf”

YG promised to release three music videos for Akdong Musician’s debut album: a song chosen by YG (“200%”), a song chosen by AKMU themselves (“얼음들”), and finally a song chosen by the fans. They released the first two videos right away and promised to release the final video after determining which song was the most popular and making a video as quickly as possible. I decided to wait and see which song would be the third to earn a video before writing anything.

With the release of the adorable mv for “Give Love,” I resigned myself to the fact that the enthusiasm I have for my personal favorite songs will not always be shared by others (although I did a double-take because the audio for “Astroturf” made an appearance at the beginning of the “Give Love” mv). So I will gush about AKMU’s “Astroturf” over here in my little Forever Alone corner.

“Astroturf” is another cheerful little song in keeping with AKMU’s style, but its lyrics are a rather somber message of how what seems good is not always that great, and that nothing is permanent in life… A “grass is greener” metaphor that also involves grass! It’s particularly intriguing how the lyrics start off positively listing the beneficial aspects of being astroturf before switching completely: astroturf ultimately can’t be happy because it can’t breathe like real grass, and ultimately it will begin to fall apart. Despite being so young, Chan Hyuk is beyond talented and has quite a future waiting for him, as a lyricist, a musician, producer… I think the kid can do anything he wants.

I personally love when songs overlay a rather dark message with bright and cheerful music, so AKMU’s “Astroturf” plays right into my interests.

Take a look at the lyrics:

All things I have are looking good
You know why?

All things they have are looking good
You know what?

English:

I don’t need sun or water
because even without those I can live well
(literally: live with my stomach full)
I don’t need to worry about droughts
because even if I’m stepped on and crushed,
I don’t lose my color

Everything looks good
All things I have are looking good
But the reason I couldn’t be happy is…
do you know why?

I, too, want to breathe
I want to swallow the rain and spread my roots
Like real grass
Like real grass

Look at that field that gets itched when the wind blows
Even if the wind blows, my blades don’t feel that
Those blades that get embarrassed when they touch the bare earth
I’m different from them; I’m not alive
(literally: my life doesn’t turn)

They look good
All things they have are looking good
The reason even their withering form is beautiful is…
You know what?

I want to breathe, too
I want to swallow the rain and spread my roots
Like real grass
Like true grass

Without light, without water
I thought I could live forever
My blades are growing quite haggard
and are being pulled out

I want to breathe, too
I want to swallow the rain and spread my roots
Like real grass
Like true grass

I want to feel, too
I want to say that I’m alive and wave to the sun
Like grass
Like real grass

This time I stole the lyrics from Daum.
