Ha Hyun Gun Factory, “Black Day”
Most people know that Valentine’s Day is backward in several East Asian countries; girls give boys chocolate… as a girlfriend, as a friend, or even as the ever-cliché confession. A lot of people even know about White Day, where boys return the favor (usually either with an approximately equal gift or with something particularly nice) the following month, on March 14th. But what about Black Day? For all the lonely suckers out there, the third part of the series occurs on April 14th. Those who didn’t give or receive gifts in the previous two months commiserate by eating jajangmyun, noodles with an appropriately blackish sauce (some people say they’re black noodles, but that is not the case). It’s essentially the Korean equivalent of S.A.D.
Ha Hyun Gon Factory’s cute little rock song narrates just that: a sad, sad day eating jajangmyun by himself. How his heart is black like the noodles. How he hopes everyone who is single on Black Day will spend it with a lover next year.
Come on, how could I share any other song on this day?!
As a bonus, here’s an additional Black Day-themed song (try to make it past the first 30 seconds or so, it gets better):
