Label, “Twenty-five”

I love acoustic guitar. I love cello. The two together are an absolutely lethal combination for me, so how was I to resist this song? And it gradually builds to outright rock and a great guitar solo that sends me straight back to my 90’s alt rock.

Also, +1 for the Nirvana sticker on the guitar… and the tattoo! I don’t know if that’s real, but it certainly looks real. From what I understand, tattoos are just as taboo in Korea as they are in Japan, which is to say they are very taboo. It’s interesting and refreshing to see someone (not foreign) so openly flaunt their art.

Other than the infatuation with Nirvana, the video shows the contrast between day and night which is marked by indifference for the man. The whole song seems to be about overcoming the boredom and monotony (and perhaps depression) of life.

When I first searched for the lyrics, they were hard enough to find in Korean (also, the classic composer Ravel is spelled the same way as Label in hangeul, so that’s confusing, too). The lyrics simply don’t exist in English. But the original Korean is really obfuscated, so even though I did my best to translate them, this is possibly my most inaccurate translation ever. But here’s the result for anyone else who wants at least a general picture of what’s being sung:

English:

Time tirelessly comes running
I snap at myself

If I sit by the riverside,
everything is boring

My left and right
those places
I am there somewhere
Ah~

With this night of mine
my soul and heart
receive courage
Ah~

The thing that opens my eyes in the morning
is the same thing that puts me to sleep

Sleep comes late at night
Only then do I open my eyes

My left and right
those places
I am there somewhere
Ah~

With this night of mine
my soul and heart
receive courage
Ah~

With this night of mine
my fingertips and lips
receive wisdom

It’s a dry wave
Come to me
So many times here
Come to me
