Bangtan Boys (BTS), “Boy in Luv”

This song has been drawing a lot of comparison to B.A.P’s early releases, and for a good reason. It has the powerful mix of hip hop and rock with confidence oozing from every member in the video. When comparing it to B.A.P’s almost simultaneous release of “1004,” it almost seems as if BTS has taken B.A.P’s place as badass hip-hoppers. Simon and Martina of Eat Your Kimchi actually said this quite plainly in their Music Monday analysis of the two songs.

And that’s fine and dandy. Exclusively examining the sound of the two songs, those who appreciated B.A.P’s original sound will probably prefer BTS’ “Boy in Luv” over B.A.P’s “1004.” I know I did!

BUT.

And this is a huge but for me: the treatment of the girl in BTS’ mv for “Boy in Luv” is not only unacceptable, it is also a theme that extends into the lyrics of the song itself. With lyrics like “널 갖고 말 거야 두고 봐” (“I’ll have you, wait and see”) and “날 같은 남잘 놓치면 후회하게 될 걸” (“If you let go of a guy like me, you’ll regret it”), the lyrics don’t seem entirely respectful of the girl, are annoyingly cocky, and are certainly a far cry from B.A.P’s initially socially-minded lyrics. These are actually fairly typical kpop lyrics… but that’s kind of the point I’m trying to make.

I’m not saying this exonerates B.A.P. I mean, I liked “1004” well enough, but I agree with EYK in that it doesn’t hold up to their old work (check out “Bang x2” for a more classic B.A.P song, and “Save Me” is the song that so promisingly opens the “1004” mv, although the chorus is a little lame). However, taking into account the depiction of the girl in the mv and the entirely uncool meaning of the lyrics, I still prefer “1004” in all its “lameness” over “Boy in Luv.”
