BTOB, “Beep Beep”
This is the most I’ve been unexpectedly excited for a song since BIGSTAR’s “Run & Run.” BTOB’s previous releases had never grabbed my attention because they never really distinguished themselves from other male groups enough. But “Beep Beep” has all the same qualities as “Run and Run”: a really catchy, upbeat song with a goofy, inconsequential mv. It’s all complete fluff, and that is why it’s so incredibly lovable and totally irresistible.
But the winning formula requires that the song be combined with the video. If I had just heard the song, I would have thought it’s just another boring song about a breakup. Wah wah. It’s the combination of 1. stereotypical lyrics about being thrown away and crying about it, and 2. a video showing them goofing off (obviously not giving a shit about the breakup) that gives the song an attractive irony. Also, I thought the extended metaphor of traffic representing the stuffed feeling of the breakup was pretty crafty.
I will also willingly admit that the dance helped sucker me in. I was hooked from the very moment they plopped down and did the circle-honk-honk arm movements for the chorus (뛰뛰빵~빵!!). I even tried to join in for the very next chorus. But even in whole the dance was very sharp, not overdone, and enjoyable.
The only thing I wasn’t a huge fan of was the break in the middle where they attempt to appeal to their “serious singer” side. Ya~wn. It doesn’t fit the rest of the song and unnecessarily weighs the song down.
Even still, I was very disappointed that EYK said they thought “Beep Beep” was boring and so didn’t bother covering it, instead going into their fairly slanted analysis of B.A.P vs. BTS. DON’T LISTEN TO EYK and instead enjoy “Beep Beep” for the awesome song it is!
