Puer Kim, “Manyo Maash”
Puer Kim’s debut into the Korean music scene really couldn’t have been better. The acoustic bass line with string section (reminiscent of 50’s rock and roll) compliments her smoky voice and sets the tone well for the dark music video. All in all, both track and video are solid.
Despite what Mystic89 purports, the lyrics seem to be a criticism of mainstream pop, which is an interpretation reinforced by the video. Not only is Puer Kim being restrained by barcoded mannequins, these barcodes are labeled with SM and YG. Mystic89 naturally denies a negative interpretation of these labels, but given how the lyrics discuss how Puer Kim won’t be constrained by the ordinary, by a “world that only loves bright things,” I don’t think anyone really bought that denial. One line even goes, “싫은 진실이 내 입에서 나와,” which literally translates to “Truths you don’t like come out of my mouth.” Puer Kim is more than willing to take on big challenges, even with her debut, and her talent backs her up.
