Rumble Fish, “The Virulent Song”
So Rumble Fish used to be a full rock band, but they split up and now the lead singer, Choi Jin Yi, leads a solo career under the same name (hence the album is called “I am Rumblefish”). I don’t really know the circumstances behind the split, but I do know that I liked their music then and I like Jin Yi’s music now. I will admit it took me a little while to ease into this song. It is really different from Rumble Fish as a band, the high register Jin Yi opens with isn’t immediately welcoming, and Kanto’s rap break feels forced. But after I gave the song several – ok, many – listens, it began to grow on me. I liked the heavy feel of the rock combined with Jin Yi’s rich, somewhat husky voice. Kanto’s rap still seems forced, but not all songs are perfect.
Also, Jin Yi ironically caught swine flu when promoting “The Virulent Song.” That’s one for the trivia books.
