ASHGRAY, “Little Prince”

Time to work on my backlogged list of songs I want to talk about!

The first song of many I want to cover is Ash Gray’s “Little Prince.” It should be noted that this is Ash Gray’s first release with their new vocalist, Bruzi, replacing Ma Hyun Kwon. Some people have suggested that the vocalist change is what brought about their shift from rock-ballad songs to electropop, but who knows.

As the title might suggest, this song relies heavily on the French novel of the same name by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry for interpretation of the lyrics. Much like Jung Joon Young’s “Spotless Mind” is essentially an extension of the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, so is “Little Prince” an extension of Saint-Exupéry’s novel.

For transparency’s sake, I unfortunately had not previously read Little Prince. But in my attempt to understand the song, I fully researched the novel and now I know how it ends so when I ultimately read the novel (as I surely will, it sounds incredible) a great amount of the joy in experiencing an unknown adventure will be ruined. But on the bright side, at least I understand what to make of the song.

To begin, the song is essentially about the return to B-612, the “planet” (asteroid, really) the narrator assumes the Little Prince to be from in the novel. Bruzi opens by thanking and saying goodbye to Earth, promising to return occasionally to watch it wear away. A lot of the imagery from the novel also makes an appearance in the song, such as the rose and the fox.

The mv is even more difficult to interpret than the lyrics themselves, but there are certain moments that are easier to pick up, like at 1:25 when a rose in the glass, or at 2:15 where constellation motifs make an appearance when the lyrics discuss stars embroidering the night sky. The snow-laden landscape also doesn’t seem too different from the barren Sahara setting of Little Prince. Stuff like that seems solid, all other symbolism is pure conjecture.

“Little Prince” is an immediately catchy but nevertheless thought-provoking song, accompanied by a carefully constructed and equally contemplative video. It’s really hard to complain.

I found absolutely no English lyrics to check my own translation against. So I have decided to offer my own ENTIRELY INACCURATE English lyrics for anyone who might be in my own situation. Not only am I not very good at Korean, I tried to reduce the Konglish so it’s not a literal translation at all.

Planet 612 응답해

잠시 please hold on my one rose

Planet 612 기다려

이제 let’s ride on UFO

겨우 알았어 my treasure

One love

출발해 love drive

마지막 엔진 check

이제 곧 sunrise

서둘러 you copy

Hey 여우, rocket time

Roger that, good luck, you copy

Planet 612

Planet 612 응답해

잠시 please hold on my one rose

English:

Goodbye, Earth, and thank you

I will surely come on occasion to watch you wear away

I know, we eventually throw away the precious things

and regret doing so

Planet 612, answer me

Please hold onto my one rose for a little while

I will turn my back on the losing sun

and go to you now

Planet 612, wait for me

Let’s ride on a UFO now

I barely knew my treasure

That’s certainly you, one love

Let’s depart on this love drive

This is the last engine check

The sunrise will be soon now

Hurry up, you copy?

Hey fox, it’s rocket time

A love strike thanks to you

A lucky strike emergency landing on Earth

Roger that, good luck, you copy?

Planet 612

Planet 612, answer me

Please hold onto my one rose for a little while

I will turn my back on the losing sun

and go to you now

Planet 612

You’ll be there on some star

that embroiders that far night sky

Even though I can’t embrace you who are ending

I’ll become a star and illuminate you

Planet 612, answer me

Please hold onto my one rose for a little while

I will turn my back on the losing sun

and go to you now
