House of the Dragonfly
Yong JunHyung, “Flower”
This is the B2ST member’s first foray into solo-dom, and it suits him well. There has been a lot of nonsense comparing Junhyung to G-Dragon, which only makes sense when taking into consideration that both have produced incredibly mesmerizing songs that feature rapping. Both GD and Junhyung released highly symbolic videos as well, but hey – that’s art. Anyone espousing similarities beyond this completely befuddles me. It’s like saying, “Hey, X made a song! He’s copying Y!”
Anyway. Junhyung’s song utilizes metaphor really well in describing his love as a flower (in case the title didn’t give it away) that he is drawn to as a butterfly. He frequently uses the motif of fragrance, especially of it being left after the departure of the flower, and ultimately the flower and his love wilting. Very poetic, very well reinforced by the imagery in the beautiful mv. I thought the flower arrangements in his coffin were an especially nice touch.
The dance is pretty incredible. Not perfect or the best ever, but the last 30 seconds or so really sealed the deal for me. The choreography mostly seemed like an excuse for the backup dancers to show off, which, since they had something to show off, I didn’t really mind at all.
