Drunken Tiger, “The Cure”

“The Cure” opens like a perfect song for me. The acoustic guitar and Yoon Mi Rae’s light, beautiful vocals create a sort of warm indie color that I have loved long before I even got into Korean music. It’s that gentle, light-but-not-completely-airy sound that I will never be able to shake my preference for.

That’s not to say that Tiger JK and Bizzy ruin the song, but the quality of their voices seem particularly harsh in comparison. It was very jarring the first time I heard the song. But the more times I heard the song, the more their raps seemed to settle into the rhythm of the song and I found myself focusing less on the dissonance between their voices and the backing music.

The video is accordingly very artistic in an indie sort of way. On top of all the fairly standard mv video shots are very simplistic, creative drawings that occasionally have fairly apparent relation to the lyrics but more often than not are pretty obscure. I have my own theories on the significance behind the drawings, but it would all be literature-major-BS so I feel like most of what I write wouldn’t be terribly genuine.
