JYP, “Love is the Best (feat. Nam Goong Song Ok and Dynamic Duo’s Gaeko)”

JYP has obviously done some serious soul-searching for his most recent album, Halftime. I first want to put his career in perspective: the dude debuted some 21 years ago, but 19 of those years have been spent as a solo artist and 16 of them have been spent running JYP Entertainment. In that time, he’s released seven albums and three EPs, composed 31 charting singles and 25 albums for other artists, and won numerous awards both as a performer and a composer. He has done his best through wildly various methods to break into the American market (although he met with only very minimal success). He was also essentially the best character in Dream High. As if all this wasn’t superhuman enough, he also was married to his wife for 10 years before divorcing recently… and then just announced his plans to marry again yesterday.

Taking this all into consideration, JYP obviously has quite a substantial amount of time and material upon which to reflect (given the name of his album, though, he’s fortunately not ready to bow out anytime soon). The promoted song for Halftime, “놀만큼 놀아봤어 (Had Enough Parties),” is a touching reflection on where JYP’s celebrity life has left him, what it has deprived him of, what its meaning has been and what its meaning will be (some people have suggested there are religious undertones, which isn’t far out of the question given the French conversation at the beginning, but who knows). This sort of reflection is actually nothing particularly new, though; the concept of desire for love and a “normal life” ultimately conquering the “party life,” and the worry of life being meaningful, has been thoroughly covered by numerous artists. But JYP’s longevity in the industry grants a much heavier sincerity to it than most other songs on the topic.

놀만큼 놀아봤어:

While I’ve chosen to share “Love is the Best” instead of “Had Enough Parties” as the main song for this post, the two songs aren’t entirely different in terms of meaning. “Love is the Best” is still a reflection on his lifestyle, including the “vapor-like charms” of money and honor, but it also touches upon the benefits that being a celebrity has brought JYP. Ultimately, though, both songs arrive at the same conclusion: the things that are important in life are intangible, like relationships, and are unrelated to being a celebrity.

There are several reasons why I chose “Love is the Best” over “Had Enough Parties,” even though the latter is the single for Halftime and the former doesn’t even have a video. JYP takes on a lower register for the verses in “Love is the Best,” to the point where I didn’t even recognize it was JYP when I first heard the song. Coupled with the beautiful piano backing, I just loved the sound of it. The contributions of Nam Gung Song Ok are fairly unremarkable, but they certainly don’t detract from the song. I just liked it better, 끝.

In my search for lyrics to “Love is the Best,” I came up totally empty-handed. I decided to include my own translation for the first time ever, partly to help out anyone in my same position and partly because it’s one of the few times I’m relatively convinced I have a moderately accurate understanding of the lyrics. But seriously, I have only studied Korean for one year in school and one year on my own, so trust at your own risk…

한국어:

Money, fame, love… now I see…

Love, wanna live for love
Wanna live for love and everlasting love
Love, wanna live for love
Wanna live for love and everlasting love

I need that

돈, 명예, 사랑 중에
사랑이 제일 낫더라 x3
돈, 명예, 사랑 중에
사랑이 제일 낫더라 x3

English:

Money, Fame, Love… Now I see…

I couldn’t become a chaebol
but I’ve tried good things of the world;
I may not be able to be the best
but I’ve received a lot of applause.
If I went just a little more
I thought I could be happy
so I climbed diligently, but…

Between money, honor, and love,
love is the most preferable x3
Between money, honor, and love,
love is the most preferable x3

I, too, do not know
why empty space becomes bigger
the more it gets filled,
or why what my heart wants
grows farther away
the closer I get to it.
I try searching diligently, but…

Between money, honor, and love,
love is the most preferable x3
Between money, honor, and love,
love is the most preferable x3

Love, wanna live for love
Wanna live for love and everlasting love
Love, wanna live for love
Wanna live for love and everlasting love

I lived according to my passion
when I didn’t even know what I was gaining:
trophies and numerous, significant savings installments,
riding in a rattling foreign car.
I became charmed by the vapor-like charms
of money and honor.
My darkening form
is somewhere between beast and human.
From head to toe
your embrace will wash me.
I need that.

Between money, honor, and love,
love is the most preferable x3
Between money, honor, and love,
love is the most preferable x3

Massive thanks to Lyrics.kr for always providing accurate, aesthetic Korean lyrics!

I would put the Korean and English translation in side-by-side columns to allow comparison, but hey! WordPress sucks!
