Yu Seong Eun, “Be Ok (feat. Baechigi)”
I don’t watch singing competition shows. I just don’t. I don’t find them enjoyable so I don’t watch them (plus there are so many).
But sometimes I wish I did because talent like this blows by me. Sometimes good talent that emerges from these shows is hard to miss – just TRY ignoring Lee Hi or Akdong Musician. But sometimes it arrives in the real music scene with criminally little fanfare, like Yu Seong Eun’s debut song, “Be OK.”
After being a finalist on Mnet’s “Voice Korea,” Seong Eun was shuffled off to WS Entertainment and received the blessing of being able to learn from legend Baek Ji Young. All her hard work has paid off, because my interest was captured once I picked up the sound of this song.
The music video further showcases her talents, featuring three distinct parts that apply different styles to the song. The first two parts are clearly simply meant to highlight her abilities, as there is no visual frivolity and the entire focus is on her and the music(ians). The third part is the actual song, and while there are some truly beautiful visuals, the focus still does linger over Seong Eun herself.
And yeah. Let’s talk about Baechigi. The song features Baechigi, for whom I have a huge soft spot. They seem to be doing REALLY well since 눈물 샤워 (Shower of Tears… thank you, Ailee), and “Be Ok” is yet one more song that they have been featured in recently. I’m pretty thrilled.
