B1A4, “What’s Happening?” or “What is This?”
I’ve been on a pop spree lately, because it seems like a lot of groups are bringing out the big guns for summer. One of these groups I mentioned recently in my blog about BIGSTAR, and that is B1A4!
I hopped onboard the B1A4 train after I saw “Beautiful Target.” I tend to dislike cutesy concepts, but B1A4 approached cutesy from a goofy, silly angle that was strangely appealing. My appreciation was strengthened by “잘자요 굿나잇 (Baby Goodnight),” which took a really horrendous theme (infidelity) and danced around it with pretty rainbows. Yes, the theme and the way it was glorified was despicable, but somehow the mindfuck was appealing. I’m still waiting for a girl group to cover it (because the last few seconds of the video set that up perfectly).
But then came “Baby I’m Sorry,” which… just… o.O They had suddenly and completely abandoned the concept that I liked ONLY THEM for in favor of a concept that was identical to pretty much every other kpop male group. This was compounded by their following release, “걸어 본다 (Tried to Walk),” which was better but still resided in disappointing pretty-much-any-other-group-could-have-released-this-song-and-I-wouldn’t-know-the-difference territory. By this point, I was truly worried for my future fandom of B1A4.
But all of my fears have been alleviated by their most recent release, “이게 무슨 일이야? (What’s Happening?)”which proves that true B1A4 has been lurking under the surface the whole time. There is no suppressing the goofiness that is Jinyoung, CNU, Sandeul, Gongchan, and Baro. This video brings back the silliness that I associated with them when watching BIGSTAR’s 일단달려, and while the lyrics are very standard lamentations of jealousy, they’re presented in such a lighthearted way. This dissonance between meaning and presentation is something B1A4 has mastered, and – let’s face it – it doesn’t matter if you are fluent in Korean or can’t speak a word; B1A4 has this unparalleled power to bring a smile to people’s faces.
