엑소 ~ 으르렁

EXO ~ Growl

Ok, I am all for transparency and stating my bias: I have not liked EXO since BEFORE their debut. They are from SM. They released TWENTY-MOTHERFUCKING-THREE teasers and TWO GODDAMN WHOLE “PROLOGUE” SONGS (…confession bear: I sing “What is Love?” at karaoke sometimes). They had brainwashed a gargantuan gaggle of silly girls and a few boys into being “fans”… BEFORE THEY EVEN DEBUTED. What. The. Fuck. THEN their debut song, “Mama,” wasn’t even that great. It was an ok song, but it was totally standard, nothing special, and CERTAINLY nothing that warranted three months of buildup and all of SM’s power and a great deal of their coffers. I know I was not the only person left scratching their head with the immense letdown that was EXO’s debut (especially when compared with the awe-inspiring debut of B.A.P, who had emerged from nowhere, backed by a nobody company).

Now that that’s out of the way, I would like to say this: I. LOVE. 으르렁. The chorus was stuck in my head after only the first or second time hearing the song. The lyrics are, naturally, standard yawn-worthy SM fare about a guy who starts to turn savage to keep his girl his… but you can’t really expect much else to emerge from SM’s moneymakers, especially when they are simply doing their best to cash in on multiple markets. Reinforcing the status quo ftw.

But the thing that truly caught my attention was that the mv was a Fred Astaire-style one take. Just dancing, no cuts. Amazing. I mean, I can dig the fast-paced videos that mirror the excitement of the song with the editing in the video as much as anybody else in the MTV generation. But such simple, single-shot videos are so rare nowadays that I think they earn a special amount of appreciation. And, I mean, the one commendable thing SM does is consistently release dance mvs… they just went above and beyond for 으르렁. Good choice, mv director.
