G-Dragon, “Light it Up (feat. Tablo, Dok2)”

(This is not the OFFICIAL video — there is no official video for Light It Up — but I thought it was an incredible fan-video so I wanted to share it.)

G-Dragon is undoubtedly my kpop music bias. I dig the dude’s musical style and I love the fact that he has a lot of say in the music-making process. In commemoration of having purchased my first kpop CD at a music store in Kyoto, I would like to share GD’s “Light It Up,” a song I probably wouldn’t have heard if I hadn’t purchased One of a Kind. It’s a rocking track, featuring one of my favorite rappers and one of my least favorite rappers, and it brought up a few thematic musings.

I’m not particularly against smoking weed. I don’t do it myself, I wouldn’t really want to hang around anyone as they smoked, and I think a great amount of effort in terms of youth education about marijuana should be put forth (like cigarettes). But I do approve of its increasing decriminalization.

THAT BEING SAID, the whole GD-weed scandal took place in Korea. Weed is illegal in Korea. Because he is a huge role model to so many young people, and because the place of consumption was in Korea, I wasn’t exactly thrilled by GD’s scandal. I still support him and continue to support him, I just think it was a poor decision.

But THEN he released this track, which is obviously not talking about aromatherapy candles. I don’t know if he just assumed it would be banned by MOGEF so he didn’t bother promoting it, or… well, I dunno.

I was equally amused that he decided to release 미치 GO on April 20 (a date I forget is associated with marijuana unless I am reminded otherwise, not being into weed myself). Either he is admitting to intentionally smoking weed, or he is doing what I would do if I were caught after unintentionally smoking weed: drop a bunch of heavy-handed hints indicating that it had been intentional, just to mess with people.
