C-Clown, “Shaking Heart”

C-Clown made me change my mind about them.

I was intrigued by the gigantic cavern in their initial debut single mv, “Solo,” and parts of the dance were ok, but overall I was less than impressed by the song itself. It failed to say anything in any sort of interesting way. The lyrics were typical pop fodder, while the song didn’t fit into any one musical category, and not in a good way. It failed to set itself apart from the whole slew of other (male) debuts at the time. And… they debuted in the same year as B.A.P and EXO. They didn’t stand a chance.

But their follow-up single really made me perk up my ears. The acoustic guitar paired with the bass, the way the melody is similar but ever so slightly different between the verse, the way they weave in multiple rap verses into the singing verses without seeming to say, “OK, HERE’S OUR RAP VERSE!!” all makes for a really pleasant listen. Once again, the actual meaning of the lyrics is a total snooze-fest, and even while regurgitating hackneyed themes, fails to do so in an interesting way. But you can’t always win all the battles.

The mv, while not particularly groundbreaking, is at least enjoyable. Dressed up as classy hipsters (so much plaid paired with so many fedoras o.O), they deliver a subtle but not boring dance. I thought the use of lighting throughout the video was well-done, both with the spotlights on the empty stage and the room with the maze-like walls.

BUT even all this didn’t make me completely change my mind about C-Clown. Ok, so they have a good song. That’s cool. Doesn’t make me a fan.

Then I heard “그땐 그랬지,” a song they collaborated with ALi for, go by on the radio. It showed, to me at least, that C-Clown could do a relaxed song without being boring. ALi’s voice also suited the song well without overpowering it (unlike Ailee in The Geek’s “Wash Away”).

그땐 그랬지/Do You Remember:

Am I a fan yet? Not necessarily, but C-Clown have become a group whose comeback I won’t easily brush off. I will at least be intrigued enough to check out what they come up with next.
