Geeks, “Wash Away (feat. Ailee)”

The Geeks are the newest, well-deserving artists to receive what I have deemed the “Ailee bump.” Following in the footsteps of Baechigi, Geeks are receiving massive attention for their first full album, Backpack, and “Wash Away” seems to be doing particularly well. I do feel like support for Ailee tends to overshadow the original artists in these contexts, but I guess any exposure is good exposure.

I do feel like Ailee’s vocals are too much for this song. She is an amazing singer and a great belter, but this song doesn’t really call for belting. I wish she had either put away her “보여 줄게” voice or the Geeks had gone with a singer who was willing to tone down the vocals to match the song. But it’s still a great song and even Ailee’s parts are very moving.

“Wash Away” features a highly artistic video, not terribly dissimilar from a cross between G-Dragon’s 그 XX and Epik High’s 우산.

I initially fell in love with Geeks for their song “어때? (How Are You?),” their pre-released track for Backback, then later with “집 앞에서 (In Front of Your House),” making me realize Geeks were one more group I was going to have to look into the history of. I really dig the light feel of their songs and the way their vocals frequently walk the border between singing and rapping.
